Apple Watch: Cannot disconnect without old Apple ID password

I borrowed my son-in-laws watch last summer and removed it from my phone when I returned it. Now he is wanting to use the watch again but it is still connected to the watch app on my phone and neither of us can get past the roadblock where I need to know the Apple password I used last summer. How can I get the watch disconnected from my account?
