When I type the serial number of my iPhone 14 Pro Max on Apple’s website, it says the serial number is invalid. It’s a second-hand phone, and when I bought it, the serial number was working. I only noticed this problem recently because I need to replace the battery. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure it is at https://checkcoverage.apple.com
Use the serial number at Settings, General, About.
If the serial is correct at Check Coverage but invalid at Apple Support, it may be from a foreign country and ineligible for repair.
i have an american model iphone in the UK and the serial is still recognised in both sites though I have no idea if a repair would actually be possible.
Tap and hold the serial number in Settings, General, About, and tap copy. Then double tap the serial box in View Coverage - AppleCare & Warranty and paste it in, to avoid any typo errors.
There is certainly a chance when purchasing a used device that a prior owner used a cloned serial number or the phones number was cloned and used on multiple devices. When Apple is able to detect cloned numbers they are marked invalid in the system.
Yes, I’m using the correct serial number the same one shown in Settings > General > About and also printed on the box and I’m checking it on the correct website. However, it still keeps saying the serial number is invalid.
I have one question: this iPhone is a European model, and I’m using it with a US Apple ID. Could that be the reason?
