The iPhone 7 ran iOS 10.0 when Apple introduced it in September 2016. It received five major iOS updates, and can update to the latest release of iOS 15, but will never be able to update to iOS 16, 17, 18, or 26. If you need or want to update past iOS 15, you will need to purchase a new phone.

That said, you should update it to the latest release of iOS 15, iOS 15.8.6. If you do not update your iPhone 7 within the next year or so, some pretty major features will stop working.

About iOS 15 Updates - Apple Support

"This update extends the certificate required by features such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation to continue working after January 2027."
