MacBook Pro M4: Soft ping when typing/trackpad, even muted
Soft ping/tone/beep sound occurs when typing on keyboard, touching the trackpad, or clicking on the track pad
The Issue:
- Soft ping/tone sound occurs when typing on keyboard OR touching the trackpad
- Sound persists even with all volume controls at zero/muted
- I’m using a MacBook Pro M4 with a BenQ monitor as a second screen
The ping/tone is very soft, so much that I though it was coming from outside, but now that I know it’s coming from me typing or using the track pad it incredibly annoying. I have very sensitive hearing, coupled with my ADD it is exceedingly frustrating that I can’t get the tone to stop! I need silence when I’m working, I can’t play music to mask the sound.
Devices are connected via your Apple account with Handoff/Continuity features enabled. The sound also comes from the computer when I use the keyboard on my phone.
I’ve been using Mac products for about 30 years and I don’t recognize the sound. It's more of a soft beep that you might hear in a microwave, the pitch might be a little lower.
What you've done:
- Muted iPhone keyboard haptics (Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Keyboard Feedback → Sound OFF) - this initially seemed to fix it, but the sound returned
- Mac System Settings → Sound:
- Turned off "Play user interface sound effects"
- Set laptop volume to zero
- All keyboard and trackpad haptic feedback is OFF
- Mac volume is at zero
- BenQ Monitor:
- Completely muted the monitor's speakers
- Connected via Thunderbolt cable
- Disconnected my laptop from the monitor
