Can 2009 iMac be used as monitor for MacBook Air?

Good day, I was wondering as I do not want to get rid off of these two macs, so I have a quite old iMac which it’s a iMac 20 inches running IOS 10.11.16 El Capitan X early or mid 2009 and the other is a Macbook air Mid 2012, 11 inches running IOS catalina 10.15, my question is, can the old iMac be utilized in some way as a secondary monitor ?

iMac, OS X 10.11

No it cannot. Late 2009 & early 2010 27" iMacs would support Target Display Mode however the 21.5" models never did. If you want an external display for the 2012, please buy one, you can get one for less than $100.

It has an old-style Thunderbolt 1 port, using the Mini DisplayPort connector, that doubles as a Mini DisplayPort.

"Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors."

If monitor you select has a DisplayPort input, a simple Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable would suffice. For HDMI, you would need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
