You can’t really “tap” an iPhone unless someone has your Apple ID or physical access. Keep iOS updated, use a strong passcode and Face ID, and make sure two factor authentication is on. Also check which devices are signed into your Apple ID.

If you haven’t shared your Apple ID or installed sketchy profiles, you’re basically fine. iPhones are pretty locked down. If you want extra reassurance, something like Certo AntiSpy can help rule out spyware, but the risk is usually way lower than people think.

Your friend does have a Passcode on their phone, correct? No one will be able to access the data on the phone unless they know the Passcode.

If your friend has given the Passcode to someone else, then your friend needs to change the Passcode and then not give it to anyone else.

if you are referring to criminals, keep physical control of your phone; never log into anyone else Apple Account on it, and keep the password to your own Apple Account secure.

If you are referring to “wiretaps” that carriers carry out when presented with a court warrant, you have no way to know whether there is one of those, or to block it if there is.

If by "tapping," you mean listening in on your conversations, that requires some sophisticated technology. Yes, governments can do it. No, your ex, whose brother-in-law is good with computers, can't.

If there is the possibility that a government is interested in your "friend," there's not much to be done except switch to something like Signal and consult an attorney.

Assuring No One “Taps” your iPhone:

Define “Taps”:

Not certain what you mean by “taps”. So, please specify, along with the location.

A. ”Hacks”:

If you mean “hacks”, then note that the only way for an iPhone to have been hacked is if it has been jailbroken. And the only way to on ow of that is the case it to have seen it performed firsthand. So, who is the seller? If Apple or a Carrier or an AASP(Apple Authorized Service Provider), then no works there.

B. “Taps”:

If you mean “taps”, as in keeping hands off, then anyone could, and the only way to assure that is to power it off, and store it somewhere safe, when one YOU are knowledgeable of, and not YOU have access to.
