Unable to reply to emails but can send new ones

On my iPhone 16e, using iOS 26.2, I have for a little while now found that, I cannot reply to email, but can initiate them. When I try to reply – using the reply button, it will not send and a message window pops, stating the outgoing address is not valid. This is clearly incorrect, as I’ve received the email from that address! What’s going on?!

"I have run a series of tests today, and found that although I can receive emails, I cannot send them. The addresses tested covered a range of yahoo, hotmail, business, iCloud and private domains. The only exception has been to my wife, whose email address uses the same domain as mine. Our email addresses have an Australian business domain, i.e. ‘.com.au’. This problem applies only to my iPhone 16e. I am able to reply to and originate email on my iPad."

Issues Sending eMails on an iPhone:

A. Start Here: If you can’t Send eMail on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

B. Delete ALL PVNs and Uninstall ALL Security Software:

If you are using a VPN or Security Software, you would delete all of the VPNs, and uninstall all of Security Software (use an uninstaller, if required by the Developer).

C. Add these eMAil Accounts Back:

Remove these eMail addresses, and then add them back. Some domains require an App Password to access three Web portals on a third-party app such as that of Mail. Here is the link from Microsoft: How to get and use App Passwords - Microsoft

D. Don't Use Cellular and WiFi Coincidingly:

If using Cellular, toggle off WiFi, and vice verse.

Hello Motyoj. I am unfamiliar with the term PTR. The matter has however been resolved.

As I posted to Mr Zen (in this thread), it was an SMTP (Outgoing Mail Server) authentication issue – even though the port was correct. Some time ago when I set-up my email accounts, on both the iPhone & iPad, the Outgoing Mail Server (Primary Server) did not require Username or Password – these were marked “Optional”. It appears that recently—and on the iPhone only—this changed, and it has become a requirement that Username & Password be provided. As a precaution, I have applied the same info. to the iPad.

Hello Mr. Zen. I don’t know how to obtain the relevant codes for the error message (see above). In any event it seems you are right in suggesting that it was an SMTP (Outgoing Mail Server) authentication issue – even though the port was correct. Troubleshooting eMail Messages:

Looks like a private domain. So, if an employee, I recommend speaking with the network administrator, as they’d be the one setting up the configurations.

If not an employee, then use this link, or call the hotline to find out the issue:
