Recommendations for a durable and affordable iPad charger
Can anyone recommend a decent quality iPad charger that doesn't cost a fortune?
When I say decent quality I am referring to longevity.
thanks in advance.

Cheap is rarely a good choice. Cheap inevitably means shortcuts in quality, reliabilty and potential safety. If the Power Adapter should develop a technical fault, it may take the iPad with it when it fails.
No mention of your iPad model. Nonetheless, for your iPad, arguably your best option might be to consider genuine Apple USB-C Power Adapter with an appropriate charging cable. This will serve you well.
While not the cheapest, it is guaranteed to be suitable and fully compatible with your iPad. Qaulity and longevity are assured. Otherwise, Anker and Mophie are both well known and have good reputation.
When choosing a Power Adapter for Apple devices, choose one that support USB PD (Power Delivery) - this being the charging standard used by all Apple devices. Proprietary charging standards such as QC (Quick Charge) are not supported by Apple devices.

By charger, do you mean adapter? If so, Apple is always a good bet. I don't think I've ever had one go bad. I also like Anker and Belkin. High quality but still sometimes cheaper than Apple.
I use this one for my MacBook and my iPhone, it’s great for charging of pretty much all Apple products. 70W USB-C Power Adapter
+1
