Messages read status not syncing and messages delayed on Mac

Read status not syncing across three devices, and there is often lag for messages showing up at all on Mac & MacBook although they show on iOS. All are up to date and signed in to iCloud. Messages come in, often delayed on Mac OS, and are marked unread on two Macs while showing read on iOS. Have signed out and back in to iCloud on all three devices and have toggled messages off and on again on all.

Issue persists through four recent updates over the last year or so.

First thing I’d check is that Messages in iCloud is actually enabled on all devices, not just iCloud sign in. On the Macs, also make sure system time and date are set automatically because that can mess with read status syncing.

If that’s all good, try turning off Messages in iCloud on all devices, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on starting with the iPhone first. If it’s been happening across multiple updates, it’s probably an iCloud sync issue on Apple’s side and there isn’t a clean fix beyond that, annoying but pretty common.
