I just bought the iphone 17 pro online but want to change it for the iphone 17 pro max.
Do i have to return it, wait for refund and in the meantime buy the other model? or can I go to the store, return the iPhone, pay an extra $100 and get the pro max version?

If you purchased from Apple and are within the 14 return privilege period just take it to the store with your receipt, box and exchange for model, color and storage size they have in stock.
If you purchased from a merchant other than Apple, contact the manager at place of purchase and inquire about returning the device and your options.

That would be something to ask Apple about.
I don't believe that Apple accepts trade-ins for current modes, so you would need to take advantage of the 14-day return window (assuming that you bought the 17 Pro directly from Apple). I'm not sure that Apple would let you go to the store and get everything (return, refund, purchase of new phone) done at the same time. That would be up to them.
It generally takes a few days for the refund to be applied to a credit card. Many banks refund debit cards instantly now. If he has enough available credit on a credit card it’s certainly no issue. Depends on the country too.
