connecting Time Machine to hard drive
I have a Seagate hard drive that I can't get Time Machine to connect to. I erased it to ExFAT and it went to writable. How do I get it to be my Time Machine for my computer?

exFAT is not a supported format for Time Machine. Assuming that there is no data on the disk, you should use Disk Utility to reformat the drive to APFS format. Once you do, the Mac should allow you to set up Time Machine.
Be aware that formatting a disk will delete all existing data on the disk.

Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and give that a try.
Nice work.
Although you chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), the drive was likely formatted in APFS (Case Sensitive). You don't have to worry about this, just an FYI.
To confirm, right-click on the drive icon, then choose Get Info and check the setting for Format.
Thank you. I tried that one and it took it most of the night but it did back up. Now I have to pick & choose files & docs to drop into another HD to empty my computer. It should be a fun day. ha
Thank you. This is the only choices I have:
Sorry, but I'm 83 and not very techy.
