macOS Tahoe apps reopen maximized, ignoring previous size

On macOS Tahoe, applications (e.g. Mail and Calendar) reopen their windows in a “fill window” / maximized state rather than restoring the last used window size and position.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open an application.
  2. Resize the window to a custom (non-maximized) size.
  3. Close the application window.
  4. Reopen the application.

Expected behavior

The window should reopen with the same size and position it had when it was closed.

Actual behavior

The window reopens maximized (fills the screen), ignoring the previous window dimensions.

Impact

This breaks window layout workflows and requires manual resizing every time an app is reopened. Annoying

Notes

Happens consistently after reopening apps. Seems independent of Stage Manager / full screen usage. No obvious system setting found to disable this behavior. Annoying

Fixed it by first selecting Window → Centre, and only then resizing the window as I wish. After closing or quitting and reopening, the window restores the same position and size.

Reproduce the former behaviour: If you click Fill first and then resize the window, it ignores the last size and position.

My desired size is close to Fill, so it’s perfectly logical for me to use Fill first and then fine-tune the window by resizing. macOS should respect the last size and position I set manually, not revert to the Fill state.

With the Application Open, resized to what you want and in focus

⌘ q the application

This will make sure the application is completely closed and not running in the background

Maneuver to that same application

Hold the Shift key and launch the application

It should launch the application in the Last Safe State

As an aside

Running 3 different M-Class computers all with macOS 26.2 Tahoe

Any application I have customize the Size of the application, alway re-opens in the same size windows as when I closed the application

If does doe not work on your computer

This would seem localized and unique to your computer
