Logic Pro 12: Missing Legacy/Ancient sounds

Hello everyone,

Sorry for my poor english.

I upgraded to logic pro 12 from last upgraded 11 version two days ago and

downloaded / installed all what wasn't from the new sounds library ( = a 94,27 Go Logic Pro Library.bundle exported to an external ssd).

In "Library" or hitting Y, before upgrading to V12, I could find some old stuff inside of Legacy/Ancient folder for each categories ( Such as Liverpool bass in "bass", Male rapper voice in "vocal" for instance etc.). Lots of this legacy and ancient stuff has become favorites.. but I'm unable to find it in V12.

Is it gone with V12 for the first time ?!? Is there a way to recover all this legacy/ancient material ?

Thank you a lot in advance !

Go to the Sound Library (Logic Pro menu). Click on "Manage Packs". You should be able to add the legacy Logic 10 sounds back. Mine were missing, also. I did this, it's all back. Be sure to update anything needing it, also.

Thank you for your reply

dsparks66! I do really appreciate it! Yeah, I don’t have the time to go through over 6K .patch files or spend a whole day just to resolve the mess Apple has created for us. I’ll stick with my copy of Logic Pro 11.2.2 since that has all instruments, MIDI Loops etc. that I need located in reasonable places. I moved the app to an external SSD so Mac App Store won’t pester me about updating to LP12. Hopefully someone who’s actually a Pro musician over att Apple does something about this.

This pretty much worked for me, thank you a thousand times!

I'm really annoyed that Apple put us in this position, but your fix recovered most of what I wanted. There are still a few guitar patches I have used in the past that don't appear using your fix. One that I used frequently was 'Wide Wide Wah.' Can't find it in Logic 12 no matter what I do. Fortunately I had saved a version of it in user patches. Also, I don't know what other guitar patches I might be missing among the ones that I didn't use much or at all. Frustrating. But I got back most of the guitar patches as well as instruments that I care about.

Speaking of which, why on earth does the current version not make 'Steinway Grand' easily available? Cripes, that's the piano sound I use more than any other. Glad I had saved that one as a user patch.

This experience makes me really reluctant to go ahead with the next upgrade. Apple, talk to your users once in a while before you make these decisions!!!

I'm so glad this worked out for you. As far as 'Wide Wide Wah' is concerned, have you simply done a search in LP12's Library? I found it under Guitar > Electric Guitar > Distorted on mine. Last on the list.

The patch is found in LP12's 'Logic Pro Library.bundle/Patches/Audio/Guitar/Electric Guitar/Distorted/Wide Wide Wah.patch'

If you have your LP11 backup, you can grab it from 'fromPackageContents/Resources/Patches/Audio/Electric Guitar and Bass/03 Distorted Guitar/Wide Wide Wah.patch'

I hope this helps. Cheers!

I did updates on all of those that said updates were available. Still no 'wide wide wah'. I haven't installed a couple of the producer packs that seem to be new, but I doubt the guitar patches are in there. They seem to be hip-hop oriented. At this point I'm going to have to manually compare the guitar patch lists from version 10 to version 12 and copy over anything that didn't make it using the dsparks66 trick.

BTW, those updates took freakin' forever to download. Hours. Which is one reason I don't want to download unnecessary packs. Also I don't want to clutter my drive and my workspace.

@dsparks66! I don't recognise any of the guitars from your screen shot, not in the library on my old computer either (where I still run LP11). Did you purchase some non-stock sound packs earlier?

No I didn't. These are all the packs loaded and, as far as I can tell, most are in the LP11 library. Is there a particular one you see that you don't? They may be under another folder in the Library. Did you do a search for that guitar?

I should say that all of them are absent I my library, LP 11.2.2. No matter if I search for them. This is what I see directly under Guitar (there are no sub folders):

Most of my interesting instruments are found under Legacy (for some reason, none of "your" guitars though). In LP12 the entire Legacy folder is gone.

Hi L3LL3, I just wanted to let you know I was able to update mine to 12.3 with no issues, even though I prepared for the worst with a few backups. =)

I don't know what the difference would be in our systems.

I don't have the subscription of LP but only the bought version.

As for the missing guitars, I think a possible issue is that you're looking at an instrument track rather than an audio track. I have the same guitars in my library as you do, (except "processed" folder which I created*), when an instrument track is selected.

When selecting an audio track, do you see those guitars that you believe are missing?

*only contains duplicates and "flutter guitar" from the previous library. I find that there are several dupes but they have minor tweaks in their respective settings that do have a different sound so I kept them.

Wow,

That's an extensive instruction. Thanks a lot @dsparks66!

I wonder why Apple keeps removing things thought? I think that it was kind of neat to have all legacy instruments sorted under its old original source, like before.

The current size of the Sound Library you can se in that window where download choices are made. In LP11 it was revealed in "Relocate Sound Library".

Thank you again for your detailed and very useful responses.

Here, it's useful to note that if you open up an older file, even a GB one, that will import instruments into 12.3.

One question: did you have to do anything special to import that instrument, or was it added automatically upon opening the old GB file?

I'm thinking I should go through my old files and add all the "missing" instruments just so I don't have to go digging for them...

Jul 4, 2026 4:02 PM in response to spanghew

No worries! =)

Yes, you're correct. Opening a GB file in LP will transfer over instruments and patches.

For your question; I didn't really do anything other than having to save the patch that imported when opening the file in LP. It prompted me to Save As, which I did. The patch is then saved under User Patches in the Library.

My process;

  1. Start a project in GB.
  2. Add instrument tracks and apply patches from Library.
  3. Save and Close GB project.
  4. Reopen GB project in LP.
  5. Prompt will have you save project as .logicx file
  6. When the file opens, you'll have another prompt (if you're on 12.3) that you changed the instrument and do you wish to Save As or Continue without changing the instrument. (I can't truly remember what it says because it's the first time I came across it. If I see it again, I'll try to grab a screen to post.)
  7. Choose Save As and it will appear in User Patches in Library*.

*NOTE!: This will NOT save the Sends or Aux Channels! For that you will have to do the workaround of creating tracks for the Aux Channels and then create a summing track with the original track and aux tracks. Then, you can save the summing track as a new patch. (I know. I know. It's been that way for years. I just answered another thread on that very subject a couple of days ago. LOL)

I don't know everything but willing to share what I do. =)

Good luck on your missing instruments!

While replying to another thread, I almost forgot to let you know if you already didn't;

When you save the instrument to your Library, this will NOT save the Sends or Aux Channels! So when you apply this to another project, your sends will be missing.
