RE: MS Word will not drag-to-highlight post:
(turning Word on and off only worked once; disabling Pen (general), smart cursoring and smart cut-and-paste doesn't work, but there's a workaround: cursor at the start of the chosen selection, then move the cursor to the end and hit shift+click. Annoying but works for me.

I followed a community post "MS Word will not drag-to-highlight text on Mac", closed Feb. 2024, which was to restart the computer. I'd forgotten that, and it did work for a while, so just did that again, and it now works again -- who knows for how long!
And it was working fine until a few days ago!
What happened just before a few days ago?
Are you using a third-party input device? I only have Office 2019 and have no issues dragging out a selection. Or, do you really mean highlighting the text? But that works for me, too.
I have Word for Mac v. 16.105.2, 2021, Office Home & Student 2021 (purchased), not the whole of Office by subscription. And it was working fine until a few days ago!
