macOS 26.2 Finder: Cannot adjust column width

In System Settings->Appearance, change the setting for Scroll Bars from “Always” to “Automatically based on mouse or trackpad”, or “When scrolling”. With either of those selected, you can resize the columns by clicking and dragging anywhere in the dividing line, not just at the bottom.

There have been reports that this problem may have been fixed in the next version but it is no longer a problem if you make the change I suggest above (and frankly I would keep that option even if the issue gets fixed, as windows look better, it is easier to adjust and waste no space

Two options:

1) In Finder with a folder open in Column view, select Finder menu > Show View Options and tick the box to Resize columns to fit filenames:

2) Use the resize handles that appear when you position the cursor anywhere along the vertical line that separates the columns and drag that left or right:

What your image shows is what you should see when Scroll Bars are set to "Always".

When set to "Automatically" the separators are thin and can be clicked anywhere, not just at the bottom:

Try changing it to "Always", then change again to "Automatically based on mouse or trackpad".

If the change does not stick, try force-relaunching Finder (command-option-escape, then select Finder in the list and click Relaunch).

The handles move slightly up when the slider bar appears. Click one of them normally.
