Unable to log in to Messages on Mac with 'Unknown Error

I am unable to log into messages on mac, due to an unknown issue. I enter my email and then my password as normal but it keeps saying "Unknown Error has occurred." I have looked over everything dates, times, wifi connection, updates, you name it all. I am currently very confused.
