2016 MacBook M3: Offline dictation, Linux dual-boot

Apple MacBook Core M3 1.1GHz Gold MMGL2LL/A (2016), will this use dictation, offline

I wanted to buy a low cost laptop that would Speak-Write.

Apple MacBook Core M3 1.1GHz Gold MMGL2LL/A (2016),

This shows to have Yosemite, 10.10, and being an M3, I read it will do Dictation.

but it must be offline,

Or is there anything free or very low cost from Apple App store that works offline.

Does Mac OS - what used to be called boot camp to allow me to dual boot a LInux distribution.

I see other Mac OS in hardware.

Thanks for help.

According to MacTracker, MMGL2LL/A corresponds to a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016). The variant you seem to be talking about has a 1.1 GHz Intel Core M3 6Y30 ("Skylake") chip.

Intel – Intel® Core™ m3-6Y30 Processor

Don't confuse that with an Apple M3 chip, which is a much more powerful chip that runs a different type of code. The first Apple-Silicon-based Macs came out in late 2020, and the first M3-based Macs came out in late 2023. The single-core CPU for the plain Apple M3 chip is on the right.

The MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) is a very lightweight (two pound) machine with a very nice 12" screen. However, it does not have an Apple Silicon chip, and it cannot run anything later than macOS 12 Monterey, which hasn't been one of the "most recent three" since September 2024. It is also one of the Macs with the infamous "butterfly key switch" keyboard design (and Apple's keyboard service problem for Macs with that design whose keyboards stopped working expired some time ago).

I also question the accuracy of the ad. That MacBook originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.11.4 (El Capitan), and therefore would not be able to run Mac OS X 10.10.* (Yosemite).

The MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) came in a version with a 1.1 GHz Intel Core-M M-5Y31 ("Broadwell") chip. Could this be the machine to which the ad refers? It does not match the model number in the ad, but it did originally ship with Mac OS X 10.10.2 ("Yosemite").

All the strikes against the 2016 MacBook apply here, except that if this is a 2015 model, you won't even be able to upgrade it as far as macOS 12 (Monterey). macOS 11 (Big Sur) would be the end of the line.
