How to recover data from locked iPhone 13 with unlimited passcode attempts?

I forgot the password to my iPhone 13 with iOS 26. I am signed into iCloud and have FindMy turned on, so i can see my iPhone from my Mac in the FindMy app.

I tried to enter the alphanumeric password in a few times, and now im on the 8 hour security lockdown stage, with the screen saying "iPhone unavailable" and only the Emergency button in the middle (the Forgot passcode? button isn't there).

The data on my iPhone is extremely valuable to me and i need to recover it, and the most recent backup i made to my Mac using Finder doesnt include the data i really really need.

What I'm asking is:

    1. Do i have unlimited tries to enter the password? If yes, I have a list of passwords i need to try and I'm almost certain one is correct. And if not, how many attempts do i have left and what happens then?
    2. Is there really no way to make a backup to iCloud or my Mac now? Im still signed in to the same Apple Account on both devices so this should be possible!

Note: my phone got locked in the first place because I had to restart it and after the restart FaceID is disabled (for some reason). I forgot the password since i have used FaceID for everything since i got the phone.

Thank you so much for your responses, this is extremely important to me.

No, you don't have unlimited tries to enter the correct passcode. You have 10 passcode attempts, after which the phone will be completely disabled. Once fully disable, the ONLY way to get back in is to erase it and restore it from backup.

I actually do have the setting "Erase data after 10 attempts" turned off. Does this change anything, and what happens to my data after the 10th incorrect attempt?

You still have only a total of 10 tries to enter the correct Passcode. After that, you won't be able to enter any more attempts. The data on your phone will not be erased. Unfortunately, this won't help you at this point.

Why? You won't be able to get at anything on your phone since you will see an Unavailable message on the screen. When that occurs, your only option is to erase the phone and set it up again from scratch. You will of course lose the data on the phone when you do this.

You did not answer my question about whether you had set up "automatic" backups to iCloud on your phone, so I assume that you have not done that. The iCloud backup that you do have......if it is still on iCloud.....can be used to restore data back to the phone during the new setup, but the phone will look like it did on the date of the backup.

Do i have unlimited tries to enter the password?

No, you only have a couple of more tries before the phone locks out completely and will not allow any more tries. When / if the Forgot Passcode button appears, it is too late.

Is there really no way to make a backup to iCloud or my Mac now?

Not really. The only chance might be if you previously set up automatic backups to iCloud and you leave your phone connected to the power supply overnight. I imagine that the fact that you have not been able to log on normally will likely cancel the automatic backup that would normally occur, but I have not tested this out.

No harm in trying, but you won't know if a backup occurred until tomorrow when you log on to iCloud to check the date of the last backup. With really good luck, the last backup date will display February 1.

It's water under the bridge at this point, but it is always a good idea to write down important passwords and keep them in a safe place in your desk.....even if you are sure that you will never forget them.

No. You do not have unlimited attempts. The timeout will continue to get longer. After 10 incorrect attempts, you're done.

No.

If the data was important to you, you should have been backing it up on a regular basis. You need bo make backups before something goes catastrophically wrong, not after.

If erase data after the 10th attempt is NOT on, the data on your phone will be there. But then, you'll have to use the link I provided above on what to do if you forgot your iPhone Passcode, which WILL erase the phone in order for you to get back in. Assuming you have a recent backup, you'll be able to restore the phone from that backup once you get back in the phone. If you don't backup, your data will be gone.
