MacBook Air 2020 battery charging stops at 99

Hi everyone.

I was recently charging my MacBook Air 2020 which is running MacOS Tahoe 26.2. When I unplugged my laptop, it was at presumably 100% battery. When I checked what it was charged to in the settings app, it said it only charged to 99%.

What is the issue here?

Thanks in advance.

I think our friend, @kaz-k, has you covered with the SMC reset.

And here is some of Apple's guidance regarding battery health and management:

About battery health management in Mac laptops - Apple Support

If battery charging is paused or on hold on your Mac - Apple Support

In a nutshell, to get the most from your battery:

• Let the OS and charging circuits manage the charging.

Plug in when using the computer near available power.

• Use on battery only when ac is unavailable or when you must be mobile.

• Don’t subject the computer and battery to extreme temperatures.

• Don’t allow the battery to regularly discharge deeply before plugging in. Yes, it may happen from time to time, just don't make it a habit.

• Don’t obsess over battery life and/or health.

I'm not sure you have an issue.

Because the values reported in the menubar do not show decimal fractions of percentages, the difference between 99 and 100 could be tiny. You could have 99.9, truncated to 99.

I have found a number of battery parameters inexact or overly simplified for display convenience. Newer Mac notebooks seem to manage their energy quite well without my spending mine worrying. It should be fine.
