How to recover missing desktop items after Catalina upgrade?

After I upgraded Catalina to the newest version, my whole desktop disappeared . I restarted the Mac, nothing...

in the trash are 2 folders, "recovered files" and "recovered files #1". One is empty, the other one has a link com.apple.commerce.plist and set of letters and numbers, but nothing there as well...

who can help?? thank you

Normally one would recover lost items from their Time Machine (or other) backup disk.

What version macOS were you using before you upgraded to Catalina?

Have you possibly enabled iCloud sync for the Desktop and Documents folders?

Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

❝When you add your Desktop and Documents to iCloud Drive, all of your files move to iCloud and any new files you create are automatically stored in iCloud too. Then you can find your files on all of your devices.

Your files sync with iCloud each time your device connects to the internet. Depending on your internet speed, the time it takes for you to see your files on your other devices might vary.

On your Mac

  • In macOS Tahoe 26 or later, you can find your Desktop and Documents folders in iCloud Drive in the Finder sidebar, under Locations.
  • In earlier versions of macOS, you can find your Desktop and Documents folders in the iCloud section of the Finder sidebar. [...]
  • You can also use Spotlight to search for specific file names.❞
