iPad Air 2: Unable to close pages in portrait

iPad Air 2 15.8.6

I’m unable to close open pages when my iPad is in vertical or Portrait position.

I have to turn the iPad to the horizontal position, then the pages can be swiped off the screen.

The issue comes and goes. Any ideas why this is happening?
