Time Machine on iMac M3 ejects randomly after Tahoe OS 26.2 update

After updating my M3 iMac to Tahoe 26.2, Time Machine starts backing up and then stops.

I tried two different external hard drives, including a 2TB SanDisk Portable SSD. The brand-new SSD had the same problem right from the first backup.

I tried connecting the drives to both the Thunderbolt and regular USB ports, but nothing worked.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Many "portable" drives draw more power than the USB is spec'd to support. That will cause the port to temporarily shut down, ejecting the drive. There are Y-cables that allow you to draw power from two ports and data travels over one of them. A powered hub may work better, not requiring two ports on the Mac.
