Contacts birthday alerts are read-only

I am trying to change alerts for birthdays that are posted on my calendar from my contacts list. I get the message that "calendar is read only." This is not the case of it being a shared calendar or contact. I created the contact myself and manually added the birthdate. It's very annoying and very stupid.
