Apple CarPlay glitches/crashes during/after phone call

I use Apple CarPlay (wired) in my 2019 Toyota C-HR. Everything works perfectly until I get a call or want to call someone. On my iPhone 15 pro max I wouldn’t hear the person talking on the other side of the call and CarPlay would crash after a bit. I have looked all over the internet and tried everything that might fix the problem (Bluetooth settings, WiFi settings, resetting to factory settings on iPhone and on the mediasystem in the car). Nothing worked. I have since gotten an iPhone 17 pro. Calling works with my new iPhone, but the CarPlay screen glitches. The screen becomes unresponsive and when the call stops, the screen glitches and I see different apps projecting on top of each other. I have to unplug my phone and replug to have CarPlay working again.

does anyone know how to fix this? Is this an issue with iOS 26 (I run iOS 26.2.1)? I’ve seen posts before where the same thing happened to people with iOS 18, and an update a while later fixed the problem.
