My Macbook pro screen is broke - just gives a black screen - however i can still use this with an external monitor The issue is i have to keep my laptop lid closed and hook up to a bluetooth keyboard - how do i connect to an external monitor and still be able to use the keypad on my mac book

You will probably have to leave it open. You should be able to use multiple displays if you do that. I used to do that with a notebook, and also an iMac, maybe 7 years ago and the main issue was finding the home desktop. Remember, you're try to use a configuration that is not inherently supported (you should just be getting the Mac repaired) so you will have to experiment and maybe compromise by using an external keyboard.
