Cannot delete 'Install macOS Catalina' file on macOS

I'm currently using macOS Sequoia 15.7.3, however, I have a file stuck in my laptop that's taking up 8GB of space. The file is called "Install macOS Catalina" and it's been stuck on my PC for 5 years!! I've literally tried everything, deleting the file regularly, trying to remove through the terminal manually and etc, but it just won't budge. It keeps saying that the file is in use although I'm not even using Catalina... Is there any way for me to remove the file so that it would free up some space?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.7

It is strange it says it's in use when you try to delete it.

With that said, as a last ditch effort open the terminal app, you can find in the LaunchPad or in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder in Finder.

With the terminal open type (don't press anything after typing it)

sudo rm -rf

Then drag the file from the desktop to the terminal window. It should add the file path to the command line after the command above. Hit enter and it should ask for your password. Type it in, (it won't show anything as you type it) and hit enter.

It should then delete the file.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and and try to delete from there. Reboot normally.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

It's a file on my Desktop (I sometimes move it to a random folder so that it doesn't bug me that much). It doesn't show up as a regular Installer so I don't have the option to eject it and it doesn't show up in the Applications folder too. There is a Disk Image file if I press "Show package contents" but it doesn't have an eject option as well (not sure if that helps).

Tried the Terminal steps, and tried to delete it through Safe Mode as well, didn’t work, it says I don’t have permission to remove the file if I try it through the Terminal. If i try to remove through the regular Bin it just says that the file is in use and can’t be removed. I’m guessing I can’t remove with Safe Mode because of the package contents that contain a Disk Image file for which I can’t change the permissions.
