How to remove old Apple ID during new phone setup?

When setting up my new phone and old Apple ID (from an old job) came up. My current Apple ID works fine and I don't need this old one. How do I get rid of it?

A new phone would not have brought up your old Apple ID, unless you

  • Entered that Apple ID
  • Used Quick Start to transfer data from another iPhone or iPad registered with that Apple ID
  • etc.

To "get rid" of the old Apple ID, you can completely wipe and reset the phone as described here.

This will require you to provide the password associated with the old Apple ID to satisfy the Activation Lock. If the phone is Activation Locked to an work-associated account for which you do not have the credentials, you won't be able to remove the Activation Lock unless

  • You can get the assistance of the person or company to whom the phone is locked, or
  • You have proof of purchase of the new phone that is satisfactory to Apple, and the new phone isn't in Lost Mode. (Then Apple might consider an Activation Lock support request.)

When is this old "Apple ID" coming up exactly.

Its possible, if you are setting up the new iPhone from a backup of an old one, that it may be trying to download apps that were once downloaded with that old Apple ID, if so, the only way to get rid of the Apple ID is to delete the apps that are tied to this ID.

Beyond that, you would really need to clarify where exactly it's asking for this ID.

I did restore the new phone using the data transfer option from the old phone. I probably missed some prompt where I could have not transferred all of the Apple IDs associated with it (?). It's an account I haven't even thought of in a few years and the company is now defunct. I noticed it when my Settings area had a red indicator and wants me to update the apple account settings. Everything else works fine but that little red number 1 will drive me nuts (a personality trait I need to work on). If I missed a prompt on the transfer maybe I should wipe and restore from my iCloud backup. Thoughts?

There is no prompt. If there was an Apple ID signed in somewhere on the old iPhone, Quick Start would simply transfer it without asking.

Easiest thing to do, is to just access the little red prompt there, and see where it's asking for the account. Might be the App Store, Messages, FaceTime or some other setting there. Then you can back out, go to the place it's asking for it, and remove the account. But you would need to tell us where it takes you when you tap on the red icon in the Settings app.

I would not delete the account before understanding where it is. Deleting it, will not remove it from your device and can cause your device to become unusable if it's logged in somewhere where you then can't log out of it.

See the support document: click here ➜ How to delete your Apple Account - Apple Support

  • Make sure that you sign out of all your devices to avoid issues with apps that use your Apple Account or iCloud. After your account is deleted, you can’t sign out of iCloud or turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock on your devices. If you forget to sign out, you might not be able to use your device when your account is deleted.

Deletion of the account should be the very last thing you do after you've verified it's not logged in anywhere and have backed up any data.

With that said, unless the account is logged in to iCloud in Settings ➜ Account, those photos would not be part of the library in the Photos App.

You can verify what is contained in that account by logging in with it at https://icloud.com/photos

Last time I checked, permanently deleting an Apple ID that you yourself set up starts with contacting Apple at privacy.apple.com

The OP would definitely want to sign out of this Apple ID on the new phone – and any other devices that he or she owns – before permanently deleting the Apple Account itself.

If I'm not mistaken, deleting the account while the phone is Activation Locked wouldn't remove the Activation Lock - but would make it impossible to enter the associated password to unlock the phone and get rid of it.

Well, I managed to find the old password (it was one of three I used at the time for work logins. I know, I know, bad thing to do but I used a password manager now) and got logged in. I found an Apple site to request the deletion of the old Apple ID and it's telling me there are 900ish pictures associated with it. I've got 3,600 on my normal account. Does anyone know if these 900 pictures associated with the old ID would show up along with my normal pictures in the Photos app? Essentially, if I'm not going to lose anything I haven't had access to in a number of years I'm going to let it go.

Also, thanks very much to everybody commenting on this. I appreciate the help.
