2012 iMac cannot connect to App store or iCloud.

I have a late 2012 27" iMac that I would like to use as a monitor. I had to recover the OS which was all the way back to mountain lion 10.8. I completely erased the hard drive to do it. Now although I have a stable ethernet connection I cannot update in the app store. It says 'cannot connect to the internet'. I'm not able to sign in to iCloud. Also Safari has trouble even with Apple.com. It will connect to Facebook and Yahoo in a very rudimentary form but no other sites. What can I do to get this to connect to the App store so I can update back to Catalina?

You need to use a web browser to get the Mac OX versions before High Sierra.

Another option is to create a bootable High Sierra or Catalina installer using a different Mac.

Lastly while the 2012 27" iMac can be used as a display, only certain older Mac models can use it as a display.

2012 will run macOS 10.15 Catalina

to get the installer — you will need a Mac that can run macOS 10.15 Catalina — with an installed macOS that supports the App Store security handshake (apparently 10.8 doesn’t)

then use den.thed’s links…

the installer will download to your Applications folder

then use Terminal to create the bootable thumb drive installer

then you boot off the installer thumb drive…

this can all seem pretty complicated — it is the first time

What do you want to use it as a monitor for?

That iMac supports Target Display Mode, but the requirements are very restrictive.

  • It must be running High Sierra or earlier. Your plan to "update back to Catalina" is likely to fail, as it sounds like Apple removed Target Display Mode support from Mojave and Catalina.
  • The video source (now) must be another Mac with a hardware model year of 2019 or earlier. That Mac must be running Catalina or earlier. This means that no current or recent Macs support using that iMac as a monitor.
  • The connection must be a Thunderbolt one. At a minimum, you would need a now-hard-to-find Thunderbolt 1/2 cable. These have Mini DisplayPort connectors on the ends, but are higher-spec. If Apple supported using that iMac as a monitor for modern Macs (which they don't), you would also need to buy an $50 Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter (since Thunderbolt 3 and later live on USB-C).

It is likely that you cannot use that iMac as a monitor for your intended application, or that, if you can, that the cost and inconvenience would be prohibitive relative to what real 27" 2.5K and 27" 4K monitors now cost.

As far as getting back to High Sierra, Mojave, or Catalina, if you do not have a bootable external drive (like a clone backup), you may need to install El Capitan or Sierra first. Their installers are available packaged within .DMG files that you could download on another computer, transfer to the old Mac, and then open using Mountain Lion.

I know that target mode doesn't work, but there are some newer software options on Youtube that I want to experiment with.

I have tried to boot from an external drive and run the OS on the external SSD which is how I ran this iMac for a few years running Catalina, but the OS does boot up it is unusable as it gets bogged down in spinning wheels and unresponsive cursor. So I will try a bootable installer.
