Just did an update on my ipad A16. It changed the layout of the email to 3 columns. Left column has all email accounts, middle column has the in box that I chose (or other folder) and the right column automatically displays a full email to read. I do not want the right column to automatically open any emails. Nor do I want the right column to appear at all. How do I change that back to a 2 column view?

There were many changes/enhancements included with iPadOS 26 Mail - including the three-column view and relocation of the Search dialogue.
There are no configuration settings that modify the revised behaviour that you observe.
