Any ideas why iPhone mirroring requires iCloud involvement, and is there any way to avoid this?

iPhone Mirroring: Use your iPhone from your Mac - Apple Support

Both devices MUST be logged in to the same Apple ID, which means the same iCloud account. There is no way around this requirement, my guess is that it is a firm security requirement, you can imagine how important it is that someone else's device not be able to see content on your device. The Apple ID (iCloud) requirement plus the others listed in Apple's document in the above link (such as two-factor security, the T2 security chip, and others) try to ensure a secure connection.

I don't see any way to "avoid this" because Apple is very firm and unyielding on security related requirements like this.

Fair enough. I just wish Apple would let ME make that determination instead of forcing me to connect to their servers. If I can AirDrop without iCloud, I should be able to iPhone Mirror without iCloud. So, I'll get by without it.

Thanks for your help.

But I think AirDrop is more akin to sending a file attached to an email or text message, so no issues if both the sender and receiver agree on the transfer. No one is getting direct access to someone else's device.

But iPhone sharing is different because it is sharing content via direct access to the device itself, which poses more severe security issues. Apple I am sure wants to avoid any responsibility for someone "snooping" or improperly seeing content that is in or on someone else's iPhone. There can be sensitive information (PII, financial, etc.) on the iPhone.
