iPhone 17 Pro Max document scans are blurry

Subject: Blurry Document Scanning Issue on iPhone 17 Pro Max

I am currently using an iPhone 17 Pro Max and would like to report an issue related to document scanning quality.

My work requires frequent scanning of physical documents into PDF files. Prior to upgrading, I used an iPhone 12 Pro Max with the paid version of the CamScanner application, and the scanned documents were consistently sharp, clear, and met my professional requirements.

After switching to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I have encountered a persistent problem: scanned documents appear blurry and lack sharpness. To troubleshoot, I have attempted the following actions:

- Adjusting all available camera settings

- Using the macro camera

- Using the main camera at 1× zoom

- Using the 2× zoom camera

- Changing the distance between the camera and the document

- Using a tripod to eliminate camera shake

Despite these efforts, the scanned images remain blurry and unclear.

I have researched this issue on online forums and found that multiple users have reported similar document scanning blur problems starting from the iPhone 14 Pro Max series onward. Notably, a colleague of mine using an iPhone 13 Pro Max does not experience this issue under similar conditions.

I would appreciate your guidance on how to fully and permanently resolve this problem, whether through camera configuration, software updates, or other recommended solutions.

Thank you for your support.

The cameras in recent iPhone models have changed several parameters that could be the root cause of your frustration with your scanned document using CamScanner and your iPhone’s cameras.

Apple recommends using the document scanning feature in the Notes app or the new Preview app. The Apple Support articles I linked below will explain current best practices for scanning documents.

  1. Go to the Preview app  on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Scan Documents.
  3. Position the iPhone camera so the text or document appears on the screen.
  4. iPhone automatically captures the page. To capture the scan yourself instead of automatically, tap Auto (the label changes to Manual), then tap the Shutter button.
  5. Repeat the step above to scan additional pages.
  6. Tap the thumbnails at the bottom of the screen to crop, rotate, or adjust the coloring of the scan.
  7. Tap  when you’re finished scanning.
