MacBook Air desktop files missing after repair

I had the battery in my MacBook Air replaced and received a loaner laptop while it was being repaired. All of my desktop data was saved in iCloud. I was able to access everything from my desktop on the loaner computer as well, so I know for a fact it was in the Apple ID. When I received my laptop back after the repair, everything on my desktop was now gone. What's especially weird is that it is JUST the desktop; I have all my downloads and documents that were not saved on the desktop. Unfortunately, the desktop docs are nowhere to be found, and they are really the only things I actually need.
