Subscription Missing From Apple Subscription List - How to Update Payment?

I have a subscription with NYTimes that I signed up for a long time ago through the old iTunes. The CC finally expired and I need to update my payment information. However, I can't do that through NYTimes directly as the account is managed through iTunes. And, the NYTimes subscription is missing from my Apple Subscription List (which chatgpt tells me is a "common problem"). How can I find this subscription to update my payment information? What do I do??

Interesting.

Then it would seem it may actually be tied to a different Apple account than the one you are currently using.

Is the email for the NYTimes account the same as the one for your current Apple Account?

The thing with subscriptions managed by Apple, is that payment methods are not managed per subscription. Apple has a general list of payment methods added to your Apple account and uses those in the order they appear in on your account to charge for all subscriptions active on your account.

So even if the subscription does not appear, which is in and of itself strange, it should use any available payment method in your account to charge the subscription fee. So if you have an updated payment method on your Apple Account it should be using that one.

If on the other hand, the iTunes account you used for the NYT subscription is different than the current Apple Account then I can understand how the payment method may have expired.

Where you maybe using a different Apple Account / iTunes Account when you subscribed to the NYTimes the you are now?

Not sure why ChatGPT assumes it's a common problem. It usually is a misunderstanding of where or how the subscription was started. Subscriptions tied an Apple Account should always appear on the account that made them regardless of age.

If it's not showing up on your account, you might have changed from the account you were using then.

The question then becomes, where do you access your NYTimes subscription normally?

Unfortunately no. Unless youn remember ever using a different email address with your iTunes account then the one you use today its not an easy task to determine if you had a different Apple account and changed it at some point.

If it's visible on the NYT website, however, then the subscription would appear to be directly with them, and not through your Apple Account.

If it were tied to an Apple Account for payment, neither the NYT app nor the website would show a payment method as they would not be provided with it. Apple charges and lets the NYT platform know it's been successfully charged but does not share payment method details with them.
