we just got apple pay text scam yesterday. from a hotmail. typical one - the dear customer, some fake number and transactions denied blah blah . screen shots report sent to reportphishing.. then reported spam in text & deleted. it has started again. i guess it would be more frightening if they called you out by your name. heads up!

That’s a phishing attempt from scammers and it’s literally been reported 100’s of times if not 1000’s.
Apple would never contact you. Your bank (issuer of card) would contract you. Banks do the exact opposite of the message you received. If they suspect fraud the transaction is stopped immediately. You have to call to verify the transaction, not call to stop the transaction.
“Don't answer suspicious phone calls or messages claiming to be from Apple. Instead, contact Apple directly through our official support channels.”
”To report a suspicious SMS text message that looks like it's supposed to be from Apple, take a screenshot of the message and email the screenshot to reportphishing@apple.com.”
You can report phishing at these links and most importantly your local law enforcement.
Identify legitimate emails from the App Store or iTunes Store.

You’re lucky. I get at least one text or email scam, on average, every day. I just delete them. I have text alerts setup through the credit card mobile app. I get a text anytime a transaction completes for $1 or more. So, I know when a fraud attempt is occurring.
The mobile numbers the spammers send to are computer-generated. They're not working out of a phone book. And it has nothing to do with hacking or data breaches. So, you'll get spam texts even on a dumb phone.
I don't get quite as many as Jeff, but I get several a week. Some of them are Apple Pay, some purport to be Bank of America (I don't have any accounts with them). Also, the "your storage is full, so you need to pay more money or you lose all your stuff." The romance scam texts are far and away the creepiest, though.

I have learned to check numbers against emails and data breaches and they are far and few in between. once i find them on secondary flip phones they are usually quiet unless we get in a data breach with them. then have to change out again until we find another one. been pretty quiet as of late . no emails no internet just text and talk on those. burners.
That be great to go to local law enforcement however local said last year not doing any reports unless money has been taken😳

i hate email text bombs haven't had any of those since beginning of last year.
had one call evade comms scam shield and apples who are you and why are you calling. just rang right through Christmas day between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm. only one so far.
well aware of phone and laptop farms and every other way they can get them. with a folder of data breaches and data removal here, i have a self customized process and keep a low profile at moment.
on my devices , been very quiet and just the way i like it at moment.

Changing the number isn't going to stop it. You will still get spam texts.
