iPhone X is new for me but not able to get iOS 17

If you need or want something later than iOS 16, return the iPhone X, and put the money which you spent on it towards a much newer phone.

Of course, one of the most likely reasons that the seller got rid of it - assuming that it is not stolen - is that they wanted a newer phone.,

That is correct. Nothing to update since the iPhone X is too old to be compatible with iOS 17, iOS 18 or iOS 26.

You need to check the battery status as well. Tap Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. What is the current Maximum Capacity of the battery?
