Importing and syncing large number of notes has made Apple Notes basically unusuable.

Apple Notes is now almost unusable after switching from Evernote and importing 15,000 notes. I've looked at all the entries here that may help.

I did this about 2 months ago and have waited for Notes to settle down. It hasn't.

I have a personal and business MacBook, an M4 iPad and an iPhone 16. My primary machine is the M1 MacBook Pro with 2TB SSD and 64GB RAM. Everything is tied together on a WiFi network typically with 200 down and 30 up. My iCloud account is 2TB with over 1.5TB free. All the devices have less than 50% of SSD storage capacity used.

I imported the notes into that M1 Macbook Pro. It was agonizing even though I did it in batches.

Now sometimes Notes responds but often it shows bad keyboard lag, may freeze up when opened and moving from note to note may be 4-5 seconds of spinning beachball.

I removed all smart folders. I do have about 30 folders mostly resulting from those individual imports. I am afraid to move any notes for fear of everything grinding to a halt. Since all my notes are tagged, I really don't need folders, but I am afraid to move anything.

I do have lots of tags that carried over from Evernote. I've also tried to remove as many large attachments as possible though that's difficult because the attachment browser doesn't show size.

I'm afraid to add any new notes for feat of freezes and beachballs until it settles down again. It's almost unusable now.

Any ideas on what i should look for or do?

Hi snsok.

Re: "Importing and syncing large number of notes has made Apple Notes basically unusuable".

Seems Notes app would generally be able to handle 15,000 notes, and more, quite easily.

Wondering whether the Notes you imported were in a format that Notes can handle smoothly.

Eg: says:

You can import files in TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML or Evernote XML Export (ENEX) format.

Maybe you can check that the imported Notes are in a format that Notes can work with.
