Preview will no longer open Canon CR3 files

Since upgrading my M1 MBP and M1 Studio to Tahoe 26.2 I can no longer open Canon CR3 files with preview. Everything worked fine before the latest update to the Mac OS. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. My CR3 files will open in Photoshop 2026, Lightroom Classic, Affinity and Topaz.

Had you read the preceding posts, it was made very clear that this is an issue in Preview that Apple has to fix, and not something anyone here can resolve — other than suggestions to use the free Adobe DNG converter, or another third-party application such as the also free XnViewMP product. Both of these current product versions support the EOS R5 mark II CR3 files.

I just updated to the freshly released Tahoe 26.3 a few minutes ago. I tried to open some Canon CR3 files again and I am getting the same exact result: Bupkis. If anyone has had any luck, please share the good news. I submitted an additional report to Apple support and they used the word " escalate " again. They say they will be calling me back. I am curious as to what "Apple" expects will happen if they continue to issue the same updates to OS and the problem continues. I was able to find numerous complaints from Mac users from years past and it stands to reason that we, the users , should have a reasonable level of expectation that if the problem is recurring, that they will seek a definite solution. Or, am I venting unnecessarily?

Venting is always unnecessary.

I would say that depends on whether it is meant in the emotional or the physical sense. The V in HVAC for example. Or the pressure relief venting valve on the 7T research MRI that I had installed at a prior company, which the installers left closed as the instrument was filled with liquid helium. Due to the lack of necessary venting, there was a rather large kaboom (fortunately at 4:30am, so the space was vacant). [/humorous-tangent].

When I launch Pixelmator Pro1.  via Photos for Editing, Pixelmator Pro complains - "The Pixelmator Pro Photos extension was unable to open the photo in the Photos Library. A photo preview will be opened instead." It then proceeds to open the photo.

A .CR3 RAW file is really just a container, inside that container are both the RAW image data (still mosaiced) and in-camera generated JPG files of different sizes including one at full resolution. What Pixelmator is doing is giving you the embedded full-size JPG file to work on. It's not the RAW file, and all the caveats of working on JPGs will apply (e.g., the white balance setting is baked in, etc.).
