Buy only from a reputable seller. Request the original purchase receipt from Apple, or an Apple reseller.

Serial numbers can be copied, and are not reliable for detecting counterfeit devices.

Best: buy new or refurbished from Apple or from an Apple authorized reseller.

Genuine Apple Device:

So, who is the seller? If Apple, or a retailer, then no worries there. Elsewise, if jailbroken it may be modified, misleading you with the incorrect Serial Number being shown.

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Advanced
  4. Enter the Serial Number here: https://checkcoverage.apple.com
