Unable to delete contacts on iPhone 15 Pro Max

Running current version (I think) iOS 26.2.1 on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. I cannot find a way to delete contacts in my phone book.

Open and view the contact.

Tap Edit, top RH.

Then in the edit view, scroll to the Delete Contact action at the bottom

delete mutiple contacts I need to delete one hundred plus contacts (from my former job) on my iPhone 8+ My phone says it is updated to iOS 16 but when I follow the directions given on forums it doesn’t work.
