13-inch iPad Air (2024) - internal microphone background noise

Hello community,

I have a question regarding my 13-inch iPad Air (2024). I purchased the device as a used item online, and today I was testing the dictation app. I noticed that there's a fairly loud noise – I would describe it as background noise – whenever the iPad's internal microphone is used to record.

To compare, I recorded the same content using an external microphone connected via USB-C, and there was no background noise at all.

I've uploaded two audio samples to SoundCloud for you to compare.

Note: When you click the SoundCloud link, a login screen may appear. You can skip this by clicking the "X" in the upper-right corner to access and listen to the audio samples.

Also, please note that no other cables or power sources are connected to or near the device during these recordings.

What do you think? Is the internal microphone of my iPad broken or damaged, or is this background noise a normal characteristic of the iPad’s microphone?

If anyone else has a 13-inch iPad Air (2024), I’d really appreciate it if you could compare the recording with your device and give me some feedback.

Thank you very much for your help!

Purchasing a used device from anywhere other than Apple is potentially risky. Whereas Apple's renewed/refurbished devices are guaranteed to perform as new - and are backed by an Apple warranty - previously used items purchased from elsewhere do not carry the same assurance.

Given that you have a hardware issue that cannot be diagnosed remotely, you would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

If the iPad has a hardware fault, as is perhaps very likely, the cost of a repair may be uneconomic. For practical purposes, in lieu of repairing and returning your own iPad, Apple usually exchange a qualifying iPad for a renewed/refurbished iPad of the same model and specification. The cost of the exchange is the same as would otherwise be charged for repair. An out-of-warranty repair while expensive will be somewhat less than the cost of a replacement new iPad.

As for out-of-warranty repair costs, Apple offers a fixed-price price repair. You can verify eligibility and cost for your region/country here:

An iPad's internal microphone should not be inherently noisy. If the purchase can be cancelled, you might be best advised to return the item - and instead purchase a renewed or new device directly from Apple.

If sourced from Apple, you will have benefit of a device warranty. The iPad will have a new battery and outer casing - along with assurance that the iPad performs to specifications.

Comparing my audio files with your iPad Air 13 2024 dication app audio sample (with internal mic) would help me determine if there’s actually an issue with my device.

I have the option to cancel the purchase, return the product, and get a refund, or request an exchange.

But it only makes sense if I’m sure there’s a problem with the microphone on my iPad. I don’t want to go through the whole process if it turns out it’s normal.
