KVM switch for PC laptop and MacBook Air

I'm looking for a KVM switch to share my 2 monitors between my HP laptop and MacBook Air. Everything I look at wants 2 HDMI or Display ports and the MacBook Air only has USB C ports. My HP Laptop already has a docking station that is great. I just plug in 1 USB C cord from the docking station to the laptop, everything else is plugged into the dock (I know that the is point of a docking station). I would love to have the same set up for my MacBook Air so I can take it with me and then plug it back in with just 1 cord, but also be able to switch between the 2 laptops to use my 2 monitors. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

First, you need to confirm exactly which MacBook Air model you have. If it is a base M1 or M2 model, it only supports one external display natively. No standard KVM or dock will fix that hardware limitation unless you use DisplayLink adapters (software-driven video).

If you have an M3 (which supports two displays with the lid closed) or an older Intel model, look specifically for a "USB-C KVM switch with Power Delivery ." These replace the need for a separate dock. You plug your peripherals and monitors into the KVM, and then run one USB-C cable to the Mac and one to the HP. Just make sure the KVM specs match your monitor resolution; dual 4K usually requires Thunderbolt, which gets expensive.

What's the model of the HP laptop ?

If the HP laptop has Thunderbolt ports on it, then the ultimate setup with this case should be focused on

  1. picking right TB dock for each laptop.
  2. put a TB dock between each laptop (one for HP laptop, one for Mac Book Air M3 laptop).
  3. one TB cable link to each laptop via a TB docking station, and having the TB dock provide dual video outputs and USB bus output to a dual-monitor KVM switch accordingly.
  4. All shared monitors, shared keyboard mouse and other shared USB devices (webcam, USB DAC audio...) shared speaker microphone can be plugged to the KVM switch's console.

** Also required: brand model of each shared monitors.
