How to enable clamshell mode on MacBook Pro M4 Pro?

How can I force my MacBook Pro M4 Pro to run my two external displays with the lid closed? I thought clamshell mode enabled automatically when you close the lid and type on your external keyboard. Both my displays are under Apple's maximum for this device of "Up to two 6K displays at 60 Hz". One of my displays is plugged into a docking station with some other accessories via one of the Thunderbolt 5 ports, and my other display is plugged into the HDMI port. Windows does this with my two displays with no issues. How can I make my M4 Pro do this?

Hi,

To enable clamshell mode on a MacBook Pro M4 Pro, connect your Mac to a power adapter, external display, and external keyboard/mouse. Simply close the lid while the MacBook is connected to power, and the external display will take over. If needed, wake the Mac by clicking the mouse or pressing a key.

I think you shouldn't use dock station which makes trouble sometimes.

Getting External Displays to Be Enabled in Clamshell More:

A. Verify these are Detected:

Use System Information: If not showing in System Settings, then that doesn't necessarily prove they are NOT detected (seen as connected devices). So, perform the following...

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Hold Down: Option key
  3. Select: System Information
  4. Expand: Hardware
  5. Click: Graphics/Displays

B. Mirror the Screens:

Do the same as mentioned above, but select "Bluetooth" or USB" in step 5. So, on the keyboard, if working, see if you can mirror, of extend the display(s): [hold down: command + press F1]
