How to fix excessive brightness jumps on MacBook Pro M5 running macOS Tahoe 26.2?

MacBook Pro m5 14'', Tahoe 26.2 - The brightness control is completely miscalibrated. There are excessive jumps in brightness saturation when clicking the button. I can't adjust the brightness to my liking—it's always either too bright or too dark.

I forgot something VERY USEFUL...

Hold down SHIFT and OPTION, and you get to change brightness in smaller increments!

(In my defense, I had tried these keys separately, but I had to look it up to find the correct combination of modifiers)

Thanks for the advice. Display preset native, no enhancements, although I'm using the 'night shift' 24/7 - always been. Unfortunately, there's no smooth progression. I've been using MacBooks since 2008, and this is the first time I've experienced eye strain. The brightness increase from 7 to 8 button clicks is too large; in my opinion, there should be two brightness level jumps within that brightness range. I wouldn't mention this if this wasn't the spot in which I usually work - unfortunately.
