Flex Time: Audio region reverts to old length after note is extended

I have a section of an audio track where I want to extend a note much longer than it was originally sung. I turned on Flex Time and was able to extend the note, but I had to make that region of the track much longer as well. When I turned Flex mode off, the region reverted back to its original length. Why did this happen, and how do I fix it?
