Physical SIM and eSIM does not work together well for Australian Iphone 17 pro

SIM and eSIM does not work together well for Australian Iphone 17 pro. There are two big issues.

  • It fails transfering from eSIM-only iphone to SIM iphone.

I have an American iphone which is an eSIM-only iphone. Then I bought a new iphone 17 pro, and tried to transfer the old iphone to the new iphone. As a result, two eSIM are added to the physical SIM slots. These two original eSIMs are not working, but got stuck in the physical SIM slots: I can't delete, remove or reset them. Even "Erase All Content and Settings" can't do the trick. What I can only do is to use my macbook to reinstall a blank iOS on my new iphone without transfering any data, then reinstall all the apps one by one. This was the only working solution I found on the Internet.

  • Activating an eSIM without click "add eSIM" would add the eSIM to physical SIM slot.

I have two numbers, one on physical SIM and one eSIM. After I add the physical SIM card, I tried to add my eSIM. I scanned the QR code directly with my camera, without using "add eSIM" button. The eSIM is activated, but was added to, again, the physical SIM slot, so I can't delete or turn it off after multiple iphone restarts. "Turn on This Line" is stuck in "Activating" mode, and I can't turn it on or off. I don't know how to switch to other eSIMs, if I buy a 3rd e-SIM card while traveling abroad.

I never had such frustrating experience with my old iphones. I have upgraded to iOS 26.3, and these issues are not fixed.

Update for the second issue:

After 2 hours, the system told me it fails to activate my eSIM, but my eSIM is added to the physical SIM slot, and "Turn on This Line" becomes normal and I can turn it on or off, and "delete eSIM" is also showing.

Conversion between eSIM and physical SIM cards is not something an iPhone itself can perform.

  • If you want to switch from an eSIM to a physical SIM, this process can only be handled by your cellular service provider. Apple devices do not have the capability to generate or issue a physical SIM card.

  • The reverse is also true: moving from a physical SIM to an eSIM requires activation and provisioning by your carrier. While iPhones support eSIM technology, the actual conversion and setup depend entirely on your provider’s systems and policies.

In short, the iPhone provides the hardware and software support, but the carrier controls the conversion process.
