Epson Workforce 840 compatibility with MacBook M4 Max

I currently have an Epson Workforce 840 printer/scanner with a MacBook Pro 2019 with 2.6 ghz 6core Intel i7, 16 GM RAM, 2 TB hard drive. I am considering upgrading to MacBook M4 Max 16core, 48GB RAM, 4 TB hard drive. Is there any compatibility issue?

Possibly. If that printer is Apple AirPrint enabled, no problem. If not, problem.

Unfortunately that page is not very user-friendly, but my initial impression is that printer is not an AirPrint enabled printer:

Contact its manufacturer to confirm or refute, but Epson's website isn't very user-friendly either.

Here it is: https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/WorkForce-Series/Epson-WorkForce-840/s/SPT_C11CA97201?review-filter=macOS+26.x+%28Tahoe%29

In nearly all cases, AirPrint capability is an absolute requirement for new acquisitions. Should you find yourself in need of a replacement, I strongly encourage you to read MrHoffman's User Tip Which Printer Should I Buy? - Apple Community.

Workarounds exist for non-AirPrint enabled printers, but they rapidly become inconvenient, expensive, or both.

This printer is from ~2010, lacks AirPrint, and lacks IPP/IPPS, which means it is entirely dependent on he availability of vendor drivers.

Here is the Workforce 840 index of manuals:

Here are what look to be the Epson printer drivers (provided by Epson to Apple):

Epson Printer Drivers v3.3 for macOS - Apple Support

I don’t know whether these support that printer.

If selecting a printer for working with Apple gear, I would only consider a printer if it supports AirPrint, and would also seek IPP/IPPS support for use in Mac and mixed environments.

I wouldn’t consider an Epson printer, but that’s based on their documentation, specs, website, and features. Not their printers. Maybe the printer hardware is spectacular? But the stuff I get to look at when answering these Epson questions… isn’t.

Using this on your Mac --your Can't:

You might be able to install it on a Windows Virtual Machine(Parallels or VMWare Fusion), and then share it from there through enabling DHCP and FTC, as a way to share use it on your Mac and export the documents to the Desktop. Then, export these files to a printer that has AirPrint capabilities. Windows 11 is the only MS Windows Version, as of this reply, that can run on as a Virtual Machine on a Silicon Mac. So, you'd have to stick with you current Intel Mac, and use older operating systems, as this in incapable with Windows 11.

Incompatibility is the Key Issue Here:

  1. Read the User Manual: https://files.support.epson.com/pdf/wf840_/wf840_sl.pdf
  2. Scroll to: Operating Systems
  3. As it Reads: For Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, Windows XP, Windows XP x64, Mac OS® X6, 10.4.11, 10.5.8 and 10.6.x

Just Use an AirPrint-Compatible Modern-Day Printer:

In all, this would be a waste of time and expenses --so go for a new printer that is designed for modern operating systems, and found at a local retailer --and you'd be set from here.
