Upgrading from crashing 2010 MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

Hello. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro that although charged, will no longer actually load or stay on. Screen crashes after about 2-3 minutes. I am looking at both new (Brandsmart with 12 month 0% financing) and Amazon refurbished MacBook Air’s. 24GB and 512. Questions: will I be disappointed going from Pro to Air? Is it worth it to try to find refurbished Pro’s? Do the new Air’s do everything and more the older Pro’s did? Major budget. The $1379. Brandsmart option comes out to $115/mo for a year. (Unless I add 3 years of AppleCare for $200 more). All supportive input welcomed, with thanks!

If the crashing is caused by a failing logic board, then you can fairly easily remove the internal drive and access it from another Mac by means of an external drive enclosure or drive adapter cable. If that is the original drive the Mac shipped with, then it may fail at any time. It's sixteen (!) years old by now. If you have any data on the old MBP that you value, be sure you have it backed up somehow.

My most recent move was from a 2012 MBP to a 2023 MB Air a couple years ago.

The Air runs rings around the old MBP. I have zero regrets. It is my daily driver and my external connections are typically limited to various ext drives, the occasional mouse or scanner and, on rare occasions, a monitor.

I would caution you about buying a "refurbished" Mac from any source than Apple itself. Apple is the only source for a factory refurbished Mac guaranteed to be like new. Other sources may or may not properly prepare a used or pre-owned Mac for resale and that could present considerable inconvenience to the new owner.

Another source well respected by users here the Community is OWC. Their offerings of new, used & refurbished Macs are of good quality.

if you buy a newer MBA, it will in most cases outperform a 2010 MBP. and if the MBA you are considering is an M-series MBA, it would be a light year jump in performance.

but it also depends on what you use the Mac for that will determine if an MBA or MBP will fit your needs. things like how many ports you need, or are wanting to run more than one external display, as well as other factors.
