How do I reduce video streaming quality on an iPad to reduce data usage?

I have a data-limited home internet plan, and I would like to stream video such as from the NBC Sports app at a lower quality as it is using massive gigabytes of data right now. No app that I use appears to offer any choice on the quality of the streaming. Is there a way to do it from Apple’s own settings?
