FCP 12 cannot open FCP Camera Archive files (10.4.6

FC 10.4.6 archive to FC 12.0 The message is "Final Cut Pro cannot open files in the “Final Cut Camera Archive” format." is there another way to get these clips into FC12? The camera is an old Sony firewire and cannot be directly connected, but have a good archive of its contents.

Are you trying to open the archive from the Open Library pane? That will not work. The .fcarch file is not a library.

Create a new, empty library.

Once that is done, go to File > Import > Media

Once the Import pane opens, navigate to the .fcarch file you are looking for with the Import pane and import it into your project.

The .fcarch file is not a backup of a previous library, it is a backup of all the source files (the DV or HDV tape) used from your original camera. It will not contain any projects.

Hi (bonjour),

You cannot REimport from camera archive because you didn’t import from it previously. Look at you screen capture, it’s « reimport… » item.

From Ai:

« Steps to Import from a Camera Archive:

    • Open Import Window: Press Command-I or choose File > Import > Media.
    • Locate Archive: In the Devices section on the left, navigate to where your camera archive (.fcarch file) is stored.
    • Select Media: Click the disclosure triangle to reveal clips, or double-click the archive to open it.
    • Import: Select the clips and click Import Selected or Import All.
    • Settings: Choose whether to copy files into the library or leave them in place (note: camera archives are often treated as external, so copying is generally recommended).  »

found the archive made in 10.4 was not readable, even by original 10.4.6 program, so there was a glitch in the archive file itself making unreadable, greyed out, another archive made the same time was not greyed and worked as you affirm. Sorry to bother all. Why an apparently properly done archive file was not readable by its creator and another was readable puzzles, but decided to create the library and import the library to my newer computer and know its loaded and not discover problems later. Thanks to all.

Meg the dog: FC-12 does not recognize the archive from within the application and double clicking on the archive produces the image which was quoted in my question, shown below. Another way may be to create a project in FC 10.4.6 with all the clips and export as a finished product which then could be imported to FC-12, but maybe there's a better way. I have access to FC-10.4.6 on another computer.

I did the same AI route you did before submitting the question with the same response which means AI doesn't know. It's always wise to verify the AI answer before posting. For me AI is about a 50-50 correct. In this case it is wrong.

Meg The Dog: Having trouble Importing .fcarch from 10.4 to my MacStudio with FCP-12. Selecting file, import, the "import from camera/archive" is grayed out.

I have the archive created from FC-10.4 on an external drive where a new library has been created and where all files to the project will reside. Selecting file, import, the "import from camera/archive" is grayed out. Am I missing something?
