Touch ID no longer works for unlocking and logging in after updating to macOS 26.3

Since updating to macOS 26.3, I’ve been experiencing the same issue. Both my MacBook Pro M3 and my MacBook Pro M1 no longer respond to Touch ID when unlocking after a restart or waking from sleep. I’m required to enter my password first. After that, Touch ID works perfectly fine for all other applications, including Passkey authentication.

I’ve already contacted Apple Support, but unfortunately I didn’t receive any meaningful assistance. At this point, I assume this may be related to a faulty update.

Has anyone found a solution yet?

Thank you very much.

I haven’t found a problem. I have two MBPs (M4 Pro and M1 Pro) both on macOS 26.3, and Touch ID unlocks them normally at wake from sleep. When a Magic Keyboard is connected, Touch ID works on that, too.

Follow the steps in the article linked by den.thed, especially deleting then re-adding fingerprint(s).

What has gone wrong with Tahoe? I've been using Apple products for 20 years now and have rarely experienced an issue, and when I did it was easily resolved. The jittery mouse when I first upgraded to Tahoe was resovled within a few days, but this Touch ID login issue is dragging on.

I've tried enabling/disabling, then deleting and re-adding fingerprints but still not working. I just used Touch ID to sign in to this site, so nothing wrong with the sensor or my fingers.
